Beard shadow is the first thing people ask about and the thing that stops most attempts at home. The good news is that it is a solved problem, and the solution is colour theory rather than more product.
Why Foundation Alone Never Works
The shadow is not on the skin. It is hair sitting below the surface, showing through as a blue grey cast. Foundation is designed to even out surface tone, so putting more of it over a shadow that comes from underneath just builds a thick layer that still reads grey and now also cracks by lunchtime.
The Colour Wheel Answer
Orange sits opposite blue. A peach or orange based corrector applied to the beard area cancels the blue grey tone, and then a normal amount of foundation covers the corrector. One thin corrective layer does more than four layers of foundation, and it stays flat on the skin.
Choosing your corrector shade
- Fair skin: a soft peach
- Medium and wheatish skin: a true orange or deep peach
- Deep skin: a red orange or brick tone
Too light a corrector on deeper skin turns the area ashy, which is the most common mistake people make when buying one online. If in doubt, go one step warmer than you think.
The Application Order
- Shave as closely as you can, an hour or two before, not the night before.
- Moisturise and let it settle for a few minutes, then apply a gripping primer.
- Press the corrector onto the beard area with a dense brush or fingertip. Press, do not sweep, so it stays where it is put.
- Set the corrector with a light dusting of translucent powder before anything goes over it.
- Apply foundation in thin layers over the top, building only where you need it.
- Set again with powder, then finish with a long wear setting spray.
Setting between the corrector and the foundation is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that stops the two layers mixing into a muddy patch by the third hour.
Shaving for the Best Possible Result
Shave with the grain first, then across it. Shaving directly against the grain gives a closer result and considerably more irritation, and irritated skin will not hold makeup. Use a sharp blade and warm water, and finish with a cold rinse to close the pores. Skip alcohol based aftershave entirely on a day you are wearing makeup.
If you have very dense growth, a shave one to two hours before application is the sweet spot. Shave much earlier and the shadow is already returning. Shave immediately before and the skin is still too irritated to take product well.
Making It Last Through the Day
Thin layers, set properly, then setting spray. Carry a small amount of powder for the chin and upper lip, since that is where shine appears first. Do not touch your face. That last one sounds trivial and it is responsible for most of the damage a base takes during an evening.
