Almost everyone arrives nervous. Most have thought about this for years. If that is where you are, this is what the day actually looks like, so there are fewer unknowns before you walk in.
Before the Appointment
Shave an hour or two before you leave
Close, with a sharp blade, with the grain first. Moisturise afterwards. Not the night before, since shadow returns, and not five minutes before, since the skin needs to settle.
Skip harsh skincare for two days
No scrubs, no bleaching, no new products. Irritated skin does not hold makeup and reacts unpredictably. If you have any allergy or skin condition, mention it when booking so products can be adjusted.
Wear something that opens at the front
A shirt that unbuttons, so it can come off without dragging across finished makeup. It sounds like a small thing until you are trying to pull a t shirt over a completed face.
Bring what you already own
A wig, an outfit, jewellery, reference photographs, contact lenses. If you have none of it, that is completely fine, because it is all at the studio. Reference photographs help more than any description, so save a few.
How the Hours Are Spent
A complete transformation runs about four hours, roughly like this.

What It Actually Feels Like
Quieter and more ordinary than people expect. There is no ceremony to it. You sit in a chair, there is conversation or there is not depending on what you prefer, and the work happens. Most clients are visibly more relaxed within twenty minutes, largely because nothing dramatic is happening.
The moment people do talk about afterwards comes near the end, when the wig goes on and the face suddenly resolves into someone else. It catches almost everyone off guard, and there is no need to have any particular reaction to it.
Things Worth Knowing
- You can stop at any point, for any reason, without explaining.
- You can bring one person with you, or come alone. Both are normal.
- Eat beforehand. Four hours is longer than it sounds.
- Photographs are yours alone unless you give written permission otherwise.
- Removing everything at the studio afterwards is easy to arrange if you prefer to leave as you arrived.
Afterwards
You either head out to whatever you booked this for, or the makeup comes off at the studio before you leave. Both are completely routine and neither needs any explanation. If you are going on somewhere, a small touch up kit and two minutes of instruction go with you.
Booking a First Session
A makeup only session is often the better first booking. Two hours, lower cost, and it answers the questions you actually have. The complete transformation will still be there afterwards, and a good share of clients do exactly that.
